Letter From The Editor - Issue 37 - January 2014

Welcome to Issue 37 of IGMS.

Our cover story for this issue is "Else's Spheres," by Marina J. Lostetter. In "Spheres," communicating with the dead is facilitated by perfectly round geological formations with a crystal-studded center. It's what's at the center of the main character's line of questions, however, that lead to an explosive conclusion.

Part One of Jeffrey A. Ballard's SF novelette, "Underwater Restorations" takes us into the high-tech world of thievery in a near-future where the water-line has risen, but the level of honor among thieves has not. Part Two will conclude things in issue 38.

"High-Tech Fairies and the Pandora Perplexity" by Alex Shvartsman returns us to the magical pawn shop first introduced in Issue 33's immensely popular "Explaining Cthulhu to Grandma." This time around there's a Pandora's-box-worth of trouble brewing in the shop, and that's one box o' trouble you don't want to be opening.

"Big Al Shepard Plays Baseball on the Moon," by IGMS's own SF book-reviewer Jamie Todd Rubin, explores two timelines in an alternate history that's as American as baseball, hot dogs, and a moon made out of green cheese.

In "Seven Tips to Enjoy Your Time in the Unreal Forest," written by Van Aaron Hughes, time does a small stutter-step at the local kids' bus-stop and the consequences for one teen are anything but childish.

This issue's audio production, "Into the Desolation," by Catherine Wells (read by smoky-voiced regular, Stuart Jaffe), shows time doing more than just stutter-step; it lurches drunkenly before falling onto its face and passing out. The new world it leaves in its wake has a few holes that beg to be explored, holes almost as big as one young man's need to find his place . . .

And be sure not to miss Darrell Schweitzer's InterGalactic Interview with Hugo and Nebula nominated author Brenda Clough, plus the next installment of our newest feature, "At The Picture Show: Extended Cut," an in-depth article by our regular film critic, Chris Bellamy.

P.S. As usual, we've collected essays from the authors in this issue and will post them on our blog (www.SideShowFreaks.blogspot.com). Feel free to drop by and catch The Story Behind The Stories, where the authors talk about the creation of their tales.
